An already deflated India suffered from major setbacks ahead of the 3rd test in Birmingham. Pace spearhead Zaheer Khan has been ruled out for the nest 16 weeks. Spin cordon too has been affected by the negation of Harbhjan Singh. Despite his poor form, his presence instills confidence. He is the sort of player who bowls with his heart and soul. Middle order batsman Yuvraj Singh has also been added to the list. The in-form Yuvi’s absence is hard to replace with anybody else. His handy spin adds to the advantage.
The selectors have found a replacement in RP Singh for the injured Zak.
It now comes down to the competency of the selectors. Haphazard selection has been a thorn in India’s flesh. The inclusion of Piyush Chawla after 2 years into the world cup was a sudden and a controversial decision. R P Singh too has been out for a long time. Can he make merry at this tense and all-important situation?
The sudden inclusion of Rahul Dravid also shows their lack of morale. Struggling to replace good players, the selectors seem to have reached the inevitable end of their reign as selectors. Their decisions are now too mundane to be ignored.
The exclusion of Sreesanth from the ODI side is a decision that has raised quite a few eyebrows. These kinds of decisions send unhealthy signals to the team. Sreesanth in fact had been bowling well all through the series.
The team is now struggling to maintain balance. Only Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman have been involved in good partnerships so far. Both the batting and bowling department are devoid of the quality that was present during the phenomenal world cup triumph.
But the return of Virender Sehwag has boosted the morale of the toothless Indian side. But will he be able to make a big difference? Having been under the surgeon’s knife barely a few months back, he shoulders great responsibility on his newly operated shoulder!
India needs a complete turnaround. The players ought to show luster on field. The selectors need to stabilize the side. This is not the time to experiment.
A serious change in attitude has to be seen if we want to find ourselves in the champions’ throne again.
