With the crown of ‘Champions’, comes the pressure of maintaining it. India’s crown is right now at stake, and it will require a lot of skill and talent to make it safe. The ongoing series with England saw the mighty Indians topple down like dominos, having nothing to say in return.
The time has come for India to prove that it has what it takes to be champions – guts, talent, skill and fierce competition, everything that the Indians recently acquired. But it is now in jeopardy, because finding replacements for the established players are becoming scarce.
Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag have proved to be dashing openers who are really comfortable with each other on and off field. Due to injury woes, many players are unable to make it. The new opener Abhinav Mukund and Murali Vijay were hardly up to the task. Mukund did come up with a few mature performances, but he is hardly a comparison for Viru and Gauti.
The established middle order batsmen have reached the horizon of their career and this is proving to be a mighty blow for the Indians. Virat Kohli, a young lad brimming with talent, is an obvious replacement, but there is still a void, which somebody else must fill. Sachin, Dravid and Laxman are the pillars of the team, and replacing them with somebody is a huge responsibility on the selectors to pick players from our pool of talent. Young Suresh Raina has also displayed his skill and mettle.
Not only are there batting woes to take care of, but bowling ones as well. Spear head Zak’s absence is making the Indian attack look toothless. The spin department has no established spin Wizard with Bhajji now out of the picture. Anil Kumble’s mastery has been hard to replace.
These are testing times. The team is too dependent on the likes of Viru, Sachin, Zak, etc and so their absence is leaving voids too large to fill.
But if this phase passes through smoothly, and young players are finally up for the task at hand, then the Indian supremacy will be unchallenged for years to come.
On the other hand, failure to replace established players spells doom. But, can this testing time be a blessing in disguise? Let’s wait and see.
