From Challengers to Champions: Border-Gavaskar Trophy Review
As per the BBC sports analyst, this was India at its best. There was a well defined strategy from the start of the series to the end of the series. However, when there were a few risky moments for the Indian, these people seemed to be prepared for it. The BBC analyst added that this was the worst series for Australia in the whole decade, where it could not grab a single win.
Not only India and Australia, but the whole world knows that India has changed the entire scene of Australian cricket with a win of 2-0 in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test Series. As the Indians are being applauded not only in the home front but also in the world of cricket, the Aussies are very angry at Ponting. While Ponting admits that there was lack of proper strategy, the “Morning Herald” reports that people may want him replaced. This depends on the Australian cricket though, as out of the total 44 test matches he has bagged 32 wins.
The whole series looks like an undercover strategy. When Vengasarkar suddenly bringing in Saurav just few days before the first test match, the Australians did not have a slightest clue of what this meant. At Mohali, when the Indian bowlers showed the true color of the spin bowling, the Aussies could not stand at the pitch for long with a disgusting defeat which will be marked in both Ponting and Clarke’s cricket history for long.
The third test match was not as interesting but it was said that the Australians practiced very hard. Their spin bowlers also tried to imitate the Indian spinners only to save themselves from yet another defeat. The match yielded no points to any team. But the real surprise came in when Kumble announced his retirement and Dhoni replaced him as a skipper.
This was a very big risk at a time when the series was dangling at 1-0. There were speculations that Dhoni will not be able to lead the team as it was his first match as a skipper. But then, whatever happened looked like something that was pre-planned. The strategies: both bowling and batting under the captaincy of Dhoni was superb. Nobody guessed that this was a first time captain leading the game. He seemed more than professional. Plus he had the support of all the seniors.
As per what the BBC sports analyst said, “This was the first time in many years that India showed consistency in its approach towards the series. Normally what happens is that after winning the first or second match in a series, they tend to become relaxed. This series showed that India can be the number one team in the world if it follows the same consistency in all the future matches”. Let us hope our team heeds his advice.
